The British Education System - Part 1

Education systems are always changing and in the last 5 years, this has definitely happened in the UK. Despite constant changes, there are some differences between the education system here and the education system there.
Los sistemas educativos siempre están cambiando y en los últimos 5 años, esto ha sucedido definitivamente en el Reino Unido.A pesar de los cambios constantes, hay algunas diferencias entre el sistema educativo aquí y el sistema educativo allí.



In England, school is a requirement until the age of 16, however, education is obligatory until the age of 18.
En Inglaterra, la escuela es un requisito hasta la edad de 16 años, sin embargo, la educación es obligatoria hasta la edad de 18 años.

Firstly, the school term usually starts in the first week of September and ends in the last week of July.
Primeramente,el año escolar comienza en la primera semana de septiembre y termina en la última semana de julio.

Students start primary school when they are 4/5, which is a legal requirement. Before primary school, children can attend nursery or stay at home with their parents.
Los estudiantes comienzan la escuela primaria cuando tienen 4/5, lo que es un requisito legal. Antes de la escuela primaria, los niños pueden asistir a la guardería o quedarse en casa con sus padres.

Primary school consists of Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7.
Students start secondary School when they are 12 and this finishes when students are 16.
Instead of ESO, the secondary school consists of Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11.
La escuela primaria consiste de Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7. Los estudiantes comienzan la escuela secundaria cuando tienen 12 años y esto termina cuando los alumnos tienen 16 años. En lugar de ESO, la escuela secundaria consiste de Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 y Year 11.

Schools in the UK have uniforms - that every student has to wear. Occasionally, there are "Mufti Days", where students raise money for charities by wearing normal clothes. Uniforms consist of jumpers, shirts, black trousers, skirts or shorts and black shoes and socks.
There is also a 'PE kit', that students wear during PE lessons - consisting of a top, shorts, tracksuits, and trainers.
En el Reino Unido, las escuelas tienen uniformes que todos los estudiantes deben vestir. A veces, hay "Días Mufti", donde los estudiantes donan dinero a organizaciones benéficas y vestir ropa normal.Los uniformes consisten en jerseys, camisas, pantalones negros, faldas o pantalones cortos y zapatos y calcetines negros.También hay un 'kit de educación física', que los estudiantes usan durante las clases de educación física, que consiste en una camiseta, pantalones cortos, chándales y zapatos de deportes.



A typical school day starts at 8:30 in the morning and ends at 15:30. There are usually 6 lessons a day, with a break (30 minutes) and lunch usually being 55 minutes to an hour.
Un día escolar típico comienza a las 8:30 de la mañana y termina a las 15:30. Generalmente, hay 6 clases al dia, con un pati (30 minutos) y un almuerzo (55 minutes).

More or less, the lessons are the same. There are mandatory lessons such as English Language, English Literature, Maths, and Science.  At the end of secondary school, students can choose their subjects for their final exams. Optional subjects include History, Geography, Technology, Dance and PE.
Más o menos, las lecciones son las mismas.Hay clases obligatorias como el idioma inglés, literatura inglesa, matemáticas y las ciencias.Al final de la escuela secundaria, los estudiantes pueden elegir sus materias para sus exámenes finales.Las clases opcionales incluyen historia, geografía, tecnología  y Educación Física.

In Year 11 (last year of secondary school), students take their GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education). Students usually study for 10 GCSEs and exams are in May and June.
En Year 11 (el último año de escuela secundaria), los estudiantes toman sus GCSE (Certificado General de Educación Secundaria). Los estudiantes estudian para 10 GCSE y los exámenes son en mayo y junio.

School holidays include a one week holiday in October, a 2 week holiday for Christmas, a 1 week holiday in February, a 2 week holiday for Easter, a 1 week holiday in May and finally 6 weeks for the summer. The holidays in October, February and May are called "Half Term".

As education is obligatory until 18, students go to college and study for A-Levels and BTECs. On the other hand, students can train to work in different sectors through apprenticeships.
In America, college is used to describe university. This isn't the case in the UK. College is a different educational institution between secondary school and university.
Como la educación es obligatoria hasta los 18 años, los estudiantes van a la universidad y estudian para A-Levels y BTECs. Por otro lado, los estudiantes pueden entrenarse para trabajar en diferentes sectores a través de los aprendizajes.
En América, college se utiliza para describir la universidad. Este no es el caso en el Reino Unido. College es una institución educativa diferente entre la escuela secundaria y la universidad.

After college, students have many options such as studying at university, traveling or working.
Después de 'college', los estudiantes tienen muchas opciones, como estudiar en la universidad, viajar o trabajar.
