B1 Speaking

Here is the breakdown of the B1 Speaking exam.

• The standard format of the test is 2 candidates and 2 examiners.
• One examiner is the interlocutor, who speaks directly with the candidates. The other examiner doesn't join in with the conversation and only assess the candidates' performances.

General Advice/Consejo general

• Practice as much as possible - talk to anyone, read magazines, listen to podcasts and watch films, TV series and videos in order to develop fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
• If you don't understand an instruction or question, ask the interlocutor or your partner to repeat what they said - this will not affect your mark.
• Practice describing photographs - any type of photograph will do (a family photo, a natural landscape photo). All you have to do is describe the photograph(s) provided for 1 minute. Talk about the objects in the photograph and talk about its environment and landscape with phrases such as "In the background...", "In the middle of the photo...".
• Lastly, don't prepare specific pieces for the exam - this will sound robotic and unnatural and will probably distract candidates away from the focus of the questions and the test in general.

• Practique lo más posible: hable con cualquiera, lea revistas, escuche podcasts y mire películas, series de televisión y videos para desarrollar fluidez, pronunciación y vocabulario.

Part 1

• lasts 2-3 minutes and the interaction is between the interlocutor and individual candidates, who will be asked questions and are expected to respond by giving factual and/or personal information.
• The interlocutor asks the candidates about themselves (spelling their name, daily routines, likes, dislikes - in turn.
• Candidates respond directly to the examiner - they do not talk to each other in this task.
• Listen carefully to the questions and give relevant answers.
• Avoid giving one-word answers and extend answers with examples and explanations. However, they are not expected to provide long answers in part 1.
• The purpose of this task is to assess the candidate's ability to participate in spontaneous conversations, in everyday situations.

Examples: What is your name? What is your surname? How do you spell that? Where do you live? Do you study English at school? Do you enjoy learning English?

Part 2

• lasts 2-3 minutes and the interaction is between the candidates, who will participate in a discussion with a visual stimulus by making and responding to suggestions - eventually ending the part with a negotiated agreement.
• The examiner will prepare the task but will not participate. They will read the instructions twice, whilst candidates look at the prompt material - a set of images designed to generate own ideas about an imaginary situation.
• Candidates discuss their ideas together, making and responding to suggestions and making alternative points in order to negotiate an agreement.
• Candidates may bring in their own ideas and should negotiate turns and elicit each other's ideas.
• If communication/ interaction breaks down, the examiner will redirect the candidates but will not participate in the task itself.
• Candidates should participate fully in the task itself as they are assessed on the use of appropriate language and interaction rather than their ideas.
• Candidates should respond to each other's ideas to move the conversation on - for example, by giving their opinion and asking questions.
• Discuss all visual prompts and finish with a conclusion.
• Don't worry if the interlocutor stops you before the conclusion - this will only happen if you fill the allocated time.
• In this part of the exam, candidates are assessed on their use of appropriate language and interactive strategies, not their ideas.

• Dura 2-3 minutos y la interacción es entre los candidatos, que participarán en una discusión con un estímulo visual haciendo y respondiendo a sugerencias, terminando finalmente la parte con un acuerdo negociado.

Part 3

• The candidates will have to describe one colour photograph for one minute each.
• The examiner instructs each candidate in turn - each candidate takes turns to speak for 1 minute each.
• The candidates should describe what they can see in their photograph. When they have finished, the photograph is given back to the interlocutor.
• Descriptions should be kept simple and candidates should not speculate about the context or talk about wider issues.
• This part of the exam should be used to demonstrate the candidate's range of vocabulary.
• Describe the photograph as fully as possible - talk about the people, the activities, etc. The best way to practice this is to imagine that you are describing a photograph to someone who can't see -  name all of the objects, describe the colours, clothing, time of day weather, etc - anything you see, describe it.
• If candidates can't recall a certain word, credit will be given if they can paraphrase or deal with the task through other vocabulary strategies.

• Los candidatos deberán describir una fotografía en color por un minuto.
• El examinador instruye a cada candidato por turno; cada candidato se turna para hablar durante 1 minuto cada uno.
• Los candidatos deben describir lo que pueden ver en su fotografía. Cuando han terminado, la fotografía se devuelve al interlocutor.

Part 4

• The final part of the test is 3 minutes and it is between both candidates through a general conversation, discussing likes, dislikes, experiences, and opinions.
• Part 4 will always be linked to the theme of part 3.
• Candidates respond to each other, by describing their likes, dislikes, and experiences.
• The examiner doesn't participate in the discussions - candidates should maintain the conversation, negotiating turns and eliciting each other's opinions.
• If the interaction breaks down, the examiner will help to redirect the candidate with further prompts.
• Candidates are given credit for eliciting the views of their partner and showing interest in what their partner is saying.
• While candidates should give their opinions and express their ideas, they should try to avoid talking only about themselves.

• La parte final de la prueba es de 3 minutos y se realiza entre ambos candidatos a través de una conversación general, discutiendo los gustos, aversiones, experiencias y opiniones.
• La parte 4 siempre estará vinculada al tema de la parte 3.
• Los candidatos se responden entre sí, describiendo sus gustos, aversiones y experiencias.
