Modal Verbs - Must and Mustn't

Following the previous post about the modal verbs of  CAN and CAN'T, this post is about MUST and MUSTN'T.

With modal verbs, there is only one form of it for every subject pronoun:
Con los verbos modales, solo hay una forma para cada pronombre:
I must                             Debo
You must                        Debes
He/She/ It must              Debe
We must                        Debemos
They must                      Deben
There is no change and there is never an S at the end:
No hay cambio y nunca hay una 'S' al final:
He musts stop (INCORRECT)
He must stop (CORRECT)
The verb follows MUST. The verb used is the base form of the infinitive, which means it is the infinitive without TO.
El verbo sigue MUST. El verbo usado es la forma base del infinitivo, lo que significa que es el infinitivo sin TO.
INCORRECT: I MUST TO GO, SHE MUST TO STUDY, WE MUST TO SPEAK
CORRECT: I MUST GO, SHE MUST STUDY, WE MUST SPEAK.

Examples of MUST include:
Ejemplos de MUST incluir: 
I must study  / You must wear a helmet when riding a bike / It must be ready by tomorrow / They must follow the rules.
Using MUST in different situations:
Usando MUST en situaciones diferentes:
Expressing obligation or duty - this refers to complying with rules, laws, and regulations. Usually, if these obligations are not completed, there will be problems and serious consequences.

Expresar obligaciónes: se refiere a cumplir con las normas, leyes y regulaciones.Generalmente, si estas obligaciones no se cumplen, habrá problemas y graves consecuencias.
He must pass the Maths exam. He cannot graduate without it.
Él debe pasar el examen de matemáticas. Él no puede graduarse sin eso.
You must wear a seatbelt.
Debes llevar un cinturón.

To emphasize the necessity of something - used to describe something that is needed or necessary.
Para enfatizar la necesidad de algo -  se usa para describir algo que es necesario o necesario.


Plants must have light and water to grow.
Las plantas deben tener luz y agua para crecer.
The road is very busy. You must look both ways before crossing it.
El camino está muy ocupado. Debes mirar a ambos lados antes de cruzarlo.
Deduction - to demonstrate certainty. Must is used when you are sure that something is true based on evidence and facts.
Deducción - para demostrar seguridad.Must se usa cuando estás seguro de que algo es cierto en base a la evidencia.


Look at the snow. It must be freezing outside.
Mira la nieve. Debe estar muy frío afuera.
Expresses positive assumptions about the past (must + have + past participle) 
Expresa suposiciones positivas sobre el pasado (debe + tener + participio pasado)

That must have been my sister calling me while I was in the meeting.
Esa debió ser la llamada de mi hermana mientras estaba en la reunión.

She must have won the lottery with the new house and boat she has just bought.
Ella debe haber ganado la lotería con la nueva casa y el barco que acaba de comprar.

MUST can be used for a strong recommendation - it shows that something is highly recommended.
MUST ser utilizado para una recomendación - demuestra que algo es muy recomendable.
The cupcakes here are amazing. You must try one.
Los cupcakes aquí son increíbles. Debes probar uno.

MUST NOT/ MUSTN'T
The negative of 'MUST' is 'MUST NOT' - this can be abbreviated to 'MUSTN'T'. It is important that you do NOT do something.
El negativo de 'MUST' es 'MUST NOT' - esto puede ser abreviado como ' MUSTN'T'. Es importante que NO hagas algo.

You mustn't use your phone while you are driving.
No debes usar tu teléfono mientras conduces.
Students must not talk during the exam.
Los estudiantes no deben hablar durante el examen.
You must not tell Edna. It's a surprise for her.
No debes decirle a Edna. Es una sorpresa para ella.
